A Kerala court on Thursday extended the judicial custody of expelled Congress MLA Rahul Mamkootathil in a sexual assault case. The court extended his remand on expiry of his three-day custody with the Special Investigation Team.
Mamkootathil was produced at the residence of Pathanamthitta Second Class Magistrate Anjali Devi on Thursday. The court remanded him after the SIT did not seek an extension of his custody. Mamkootathil was later taken to the Mavelikkara special sub jail under heavy police presence.

The development comes as the court is set to hear Mamkootathil's bail plea on Friday. The expelled Congress leader and Palakkad MLA was arrested in Palakkad in connection with a third sexual assault case. In the first two cases, the Kerala High Court restricted the state police from arresting the MLA.
The third sexual assault case was taken following a complaint from a native of Kerala's Kottayam on January 8. The complainant, who is currently in Canada, gave her statement to the police via video conference. The case has been registered under sections 376(rape) and 506(1) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
