A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck near Dhaka in Bangladesh on Friday, sending mild to moderate tremors across Kolkata and surrounding areas

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake sent tremors across Kolkata and parts of Northeast India, on Friday. Mild to moderate tremors were felt across the city at around 10:09 am.

Tremors were felt in areas around Kolkata, Malda, South Dinajpur, Cooch Behar, Malda, and Nadia. Residents reported feeling tremors for around 3-10 seconds. The tremors were felt the most in high-rise buildings. Residents evacuated and took to the streets as the tremors shook buildings. 

Netizens posted videos of building interiors shaking and IT sector workers and college students evacuating as the quake happened. 

The epicentre of the quake is reported to have been at Narsingdi near Dhaka and Tungi in Bangladesh located at a latitude of 23.894°N and longitude 90.579°E according to preliminary data from the European-Mediterranean Seismology Centre. The quake happened at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Stronger tremors and damage to buildings were reported by residents in Dhaka.
