US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the car blast that took place near Delhi’s Red Fort on November 10 was clearly “a terrorist attack” and praised India’s professionalism in handling the investigation.

Rubio said he had spoken to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar about the incident during their meeting in Niagara, Canada, on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meet.

"The Indians need to be commended. They've been very measured, cautious and very professional in how they're carrying out this investigation. That investigation continues. It clearly was a terrorist attack. It was a car loaded with highly explosive materials that detonated and killed a lot of people,” Rubio said.

His statement came a day after the Indian government officially declared the blast a "heinous terror incident" and directed investigating agencies to deal with the case with "utmost urgency and professionalism".

Rubio said the US has offered help, though India is “very capable’ of handling the investigation.

"We are aware of the potential it has, and we spoke a little about it today- the potential it has to become something broader. We are waiting to see what the investigation reveals. We have offered to help, but I think they are very capable of these investigations. They don't need our help, and they are doing a good job," he said.

The blast occurred on November 10 when a slow-moving Hyundai i20 car exploded at a traffic signal near the historic Red Fort in Delhi. Police have confirmed that the man behind the wheel was Dr Umar Un Nabi, a senior doctor at Al Falah University and a suspect in the Faridabad terror module.
