The Indian National Congress was labelled a crack in the armour of 'Mahagathbandhan' when the results of the 2020 Assembly polls were declared. While the RJD and CPI(ML) Liberation came out with remarkable performances, the Grand Old Party performed poorly — winning just 19 of the 70 seats it contested.

While Rahul Gandhi was not a full-time campaigner for the Grand Alliance, he did make his presence felt ahead of the do-or-die battle for the party. He was joined by other heavyweights, including Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi, and Kanhaiya Kumar among the 40 star campaigners.
