As the Bihar election campaign picked up pace, with just two days left for the first phase of polling, Janshakti Janata Dal (JJD) founder Tej Pratap Yadav on Tuesday took a sharp jibe at his younger brother and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, calling him a “child”.

“He is still a child. After the elections, we’ll hand him a jhunjhuna (rattle).” Tej said.

His remarks came after Tejashwi, the chief minister nominee of the opposition INDIA bloc, wrapped up his campaign for the RJD candidate in Mahua.

Tej Pratap, who won from Mahua in 2015 as an RJD candidate, is contesting again from the seat under the banner of his new party.

“If he comes to our area, we’ll go to his area too. Then we’ll go to Raghopur,” the JJD leader said, referring to Tejashwi’s constituency in Vaishali district.

RJD has fielded sitting MLA Mukesh Raushan in Mahua. With Tej Pratap, too, in the fray, Raushan is likely to face a tough challenge in a seat which was otherwise a stronghold of the ruling party.

Tej Pratap, a former Bihar minister and the elder son of RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav and Rabri Devi, formed JJD after he was expelled from the party earlier this year, following a controversy over his personal life.

In 2015, Tej Pratap defeated Ravindra Ray of the Hindustani Awam Morcha. In the 2020 polls, he chose to contest from the Hasanpur constituency in the Samastipur district and beat two-time sitting JD(U) MLA Raj Kumar Ray by 21,139 votes.

This time, the NDA has fielded Sanjay Kumar Singh from the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) in Mahua. Indrajeet Pradhan of Prashant Kishor’s Jan Suraaj Party is also in the fray.

Elections to the 243-member assembly will be held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, with counting of votes set to take place on November 14.
