At least six people are feared dead as a passenger train collided with a goods train near Bilaspur railway station in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday evening. About 20 people reportedly suffered injuries in the accident, and rescue operations are underway. 

According to railway officials, the incident occurred around 4pm on Tuesday. The Korba passenger MEMU train rammed into a stationary goods train near Lal Khadan area on the Bilaspur–Katni section, railway officials said. Several coaches got derailed, and the overhead wires of the railway signalling system were damaged in the impact of the clash.

District authorities have rushed to the spot, and rescue operations are underway. Rail traffic on the busy route has been disrupted, and several trains have been diverted.  Railway authorities said they have moved all the resources to the incident spot, and all measures are being taken to treat the injured persons.

The South East Central Railway has issued emergency numbers to assist the kin of passengers who were onboard the MEMU train: Bilaspur – 7777857335, 7869953330, Champa – 8085956528, Raigarh – 9752485600, Pendra Road – 8294730162, Korba – 7869953330, and Usalapur - 7777857338.

In a statement, Railway said it has moved all resources to the spot and all measures are being taken for the treatment of the injured.
