According to multiple media reports, the GST reform tops the list of probable topics. Effective on September 22, GST will be a two-tier structure wherein the majority of goods and services will attract tax of 5 and 18 per cent.
Prices of kitchen staples to electronics, from medicines and equipment to automobiles, will get cheaper from Monday as the reduced GST rates on about 375 items come into effect.
New Delhi’s recent showdown with Washington over US President Donald Trump’s imposition of a whopping 50 per cent tariff on Indian goods is also a likely subject. Both Modi and Trump had recently dropped hints at a thaw in relations by agreeing to resume the trade talks.
Also, the prime minister’s address comes two days after the Trump administration imposed a $100,000 fee for H-1B visas, a move which is likely to affect hundreds of Indian professionals.
Since assuming office in 2014, Modi has chosen to announce several big decisions of his government through his live address to the nation, be it the demonetisation in 2016 or India's successful test of Anti-Satellite Missile to join an elite club of countries in 2019.
In 2020, he announced the nationwide lockdown following the Covid-19 outbreak. In the following year, the government’s decision to roll back the farm laws was also announced by the prime minister in a live address.
Modi’s last address to the nation was on May 12, 2025, when he briefed the people on Operation Sindoor, India’s military campaign against the terrorist hubs in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
