At least three people died and several others were injured after a truck rammed into a crowd in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore district on Monday night.

Many of those injured are said to be critical.

The accident occurred on Aerodrome Road around 7.30 pm when the truck driver, who was reportedly in an intoxicated state, hit several people and vehicles in a span of around 500 metres. The driver has been arrested and interrogated.

The incident sparked a protest by local people who alleged that heavy commercial vehicles are not permitted on the busy road and questioned how the truck entered the area despite the deployment of traffic police personnel at crucial road junctions.

“The truck driver was highly inebriated and lost control of the vehicle from Kalani Nagar road, which led to this accident. A bike also came under its grip and was dragged along till Bada Ganpati Crossing,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP, Zone-1) Krishna Lalchandani told ANI news agency.

Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav instructed officials to ensure proper treatment and relief for those injured.

Yadav also ordered a preliminary factual inquiry into the reasons behind the entry of heavy vehicles into the city before 11 pm.

"This is a very sad incident. After taking detailed information, I have directed the Additional Chief Secretary, Home, to visit Indore for inspection. I have also ordered a preliminary fact-based inquiry into the reasons behind the entry of heavy vehicles in the city before 11 PM," he said in an X post.
