The Indian Meterorological Department on Tuesday warned of a high-level cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal, which could build into a low-pressure system over the next 48 hours.
In Kerala, the next seven days could see light or moderate rainfall, according to IMD. It also predicted that there would be isolated showers and very heavy rainfall on August 12, 13, 17 and 18 while there could be thunderstorms accompanied with lightning on August 12 and 13.
IMD has issued yellow alert for Kannur and Kasaragod districts on Wednesday. On Tuesday, Kasaragod was on yellow alert along with Kottayam, Ernakulam and Thrissur.
Strong winds with a speed of 45-55 kmph are predicted over the Arabian Sea on August 13, but there is no restriction for fishermen on Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts.
IMD has warned people to take precautions during the thunderstorms, advising them to avoid staying in the open or on the terrace and keep windows and doors closed. Touching the walls or floors can also be deadly during lightnings.
Power supply to household appliances should be disconnected. Use of telephones should be avoided during thunderstorms but no restrictions on mobile phones. It is advisable to stay inside vehicles during thunderstorms but avoid parking vehicles under trees.
