The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted a prolonged spell of heavy to very heavy rainfall in several states across the country, including Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Delhi, and much of the North East.
According to the IMD, extremely heavy showers (more than 21 cm) are likely at isolated places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on Friday. The situation will continue in Assam and Meghalaya over the next week, too.
While Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to witness scattered heavy showers between for the next three days, the intensity of showers will increase in the coming days. There is a possibility of heavy rains in nine districts, including Uttarkashi, accompanied by thunder and lightning.
As for Uttar Pradesh, heavy rains are expected across the state. It is expected that all major rivers, including the Ganga and Yamuna, could breach their banks, increasing flood threats. Rain with thunder and lightning is expected at some places in the western division, while heavy rains have been predicted at many places in the eastern division.
There will be heavy rain at Mahoba, Hamirpur, Fatehpur, Rae Bareli, Banda, Chitrakoot, Kaushambi, Pratapgarh, Prayagraj, Rae Bareli, Amethi, Sultanpur, Sant Ravidas Nagar Jaunpur, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Mau, Azamgarh, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, and Sonbhadra on Friday.
West Bengal too is under rain warning with south Bengal districts including South 24 Parganas, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura, Purulia and Purba Bardhaman set to experience heavy showers till August 9. An overcast sky with light to moderate rain has been forecast for Kolkata till the morning of August 9, it said.
Heavy rainfall occurred at one or two places in Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts of north Bengal in the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Thursday, the IMD said.
As for Maharashtra, the IMD has warned of an increase in thunderstorm activity on Friday and Saturday, except Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar.
