A man who jumped off from the Kochi Metro rail track bridge in Tripunithura between Vadakekkota and SN Junction stations on Thursday succumbed to his wounds. The victim was identified as Nizar who hails from Malappuram.

Nizar arrived at the Vadakekkota Metro Station and bought a ticket towards Tripunithura terminal station. After reaching the platform, he got out of the platform and walked along the track. The Metro services were halted immediately and the authorities disconnected power supply by turning off the Emergency Trip Switch (ETS).

The Kochi Metro police were alerted immediately as the man threatened to jump off the rail bridge. The fire brigade also reached the spot and brought a net to catch the man if he jumps.

They tried to calm him down but he jumped onto the main road. He was rushed to a nearby hospital initially before being shifted to the Medical Trust Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

Police are trying to ascertain what led the man to kill himself. The Metro services resumed after polce completed inspection. However, the authorities are investigating how a person gained access to the track and whether there were any breach in security protocols. Police are verifying the CCTV footage from the station premises.

Calling the tragedy "extremely unfortunate" and announced that the Director (Systems) is leading a detailed probe to examine the incident. It is also coming up with preventive measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
