Prime Minister Narendra Modi asserted on Thursday that India would never compromise on the interest of farmers and fishermen.

Modi’s assertion came a day after US President Donald Trump slapped an additional 25% tariff on goods coming from India, which comes into effect from August 7. With Trump’s latest order, the total tariff on Indian goods, barring a small exemption list, will be 50 per cent.

“Personally I will have to pay price for protecting farmers' interest, but I am ready,” Modi said.
