I cannot commit suicide: Paralysed Indore teacher pleads for euthanasia to President Murmu

In an emotional appeal, an Indore teacher has pleaded for permission to undergo euthanasia to President Droupadi Murmu. 

Kumari Chandrakanta Jethani, a teacher from Indore, in a letter to the President, mentioned her suffering was unbearable and requested permission to undergo euthanasia. 

As per a report in News18, the wheelchair-bound teacher continues to teach students for around 7-8 hours in a day despite severe health complications. Jethani spends around 7 to 8 hours a day in the classroom. It was reported that Jethani had donated her property for the benefit of children studying in the government school where she teaches.

She claims the reason for her condition is due to medical negligence, where she was given the wrong medication for her condition. 

Meanwhile, Union Health Minister JP Nadda, in a written response to a question in the Rajya Sabha, said health being a state subject, it is the primary responsibility of the states and Union territories to implement passive euthanasia and living wills in the healthcare system by incorporating these into hospital protocols to ensure that medical professionals are trained to respect patients' end-of-life preferences. 

His response was to a question on the specific measures taken to implement and promote passive euthanasia and living wills in the healthcare system in light of the 2018 judgment of the Supreme Court. 

What is Euthanasia?

It is an act of painlessly allowing people with incurable diseases or physical disorders to die by withholding treatment or withdrawing artificial life-support measures.
