Andhra Pradesh police have booked former chief minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy for culpable homicide after his car crushed a YSR Congress Party worker during a rally in Guntur on June 18. Besides Reddy, case has also been registered against his driver and senior YSRCP leaders, according to police.
The fatal incident occurred in Rentapalla village in Palnadu district on June 18, when Reddy was en route to call on family members of a YSRCP leader who had died by suicide a year ago. The incident occurred when Reddy's convoy passed through Etukuru bypass.
On Sunday, Guntur district Superintendent of Police S. Satish Kumar said the YSRCP worker Singaiah, who suffered grievous bleeding injuries, was rushed to the hospital upon receiving information, however, he was declared brought dead by doctors.
"After analysing various evidence, it was found that the deceased was seen under the wheels of Reddy's vehicle," Kumar said. Though police had earlier registered a case for causing death by negligence, based on the complaint of Singaiah's wife Cheeli Lurdhu Mary, the charges were altered after cops analysed video footage of the incident.

"After analysing CCTV footage, drone visuals, and circumstantial evidence, police confirmed that the deceased was run over by the Ex-CM's vehicle in the convoy," PTI reported quoting police. Following this, police altered the charges to include Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 49 of the BNS (Abetment) and intensified the investigation into the circumstances involved.
Besides the former chief minister, Reddy's driver Ramana Reddy, personal assistant K. Nageshwar Reddy, senior YSRCP leader Y.V. Subbareddy, former MLA Perni Venkataramaiah, and former minister Vidadala Rajini have also been named accused in the case, Guntur SP said. The senior police officer said action would be taken according to due process.
