A day after he was arrested in connection with the abduction of a minor boy in Tiruvallur, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) H.M. Jayaram was placed under suspension by the Tamil Nadu government.
Jayaram had been arrested following an order from the Madras High Court and was questioned for over six hours at a police station near Chennai.
Following the Madras High Court order, Jayaram was brought to the Thiruvalangadu police station on Tuesday afternoon for further questioning along with K.V. Kuppam MLA Jagan Moorthy.
After the enquiry, the Home department of the Tamil Nadu government had issued the suspension order as he was accused of abetting a gang by providing his official car to abduct the minor boy and separate a couple, who had allegedly married against the wishes of the girl’s parents.
The suspension order was issued by Home Secretary Dheeraj Kumar, on the recommendations of DGP Shankar Jiwal.
After interrogation, his statement was recorded and he was subsequently let off. He is likely to be produced before a judicial magistrate court in Tiruthani on Wednesday.
However, Jayaram had moved the Supreme Court seeking a stay on the Madras High Court order to arrest him.
In his petition to the top court, Jayaram has contended that his arrest was “a gross violation of the principles of natural justice, as he had neither been named as a party in the proceedings, nor afforded an opportunity to present his case”.
Listed before the Vacation Bench headed by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan in the Supreme Court, the case will be heard as urgent matter on Wednesday.
Meanwhile K.V. Kuppam MLA and leader of Purtchi Bharatha outfit Poovai M. Jaganmoorthy also appeared before the Thiruvalangadu police station following the court order.
It all began after the alleged abduction of a 16-year-old boy from Kalambakkam near Thiruvalangadu on May 10.
It is said that Jagan Moorthy, with the support of Jayaram and others, had abducted the minor as the teenager's elder brother had allegedly eloped with a girl.
It is also alleged that the girl, who hailed from Theni, had met the teenager's elder brother on social media, prior to the elopement.
When the girl’s family came in search for her, they found the young boy and took him away instead of his elder brother who had married the girl. They later dropped the boy at a different location. In that regard, it is alleged that Jayaram lent his official vehicle to the girl’s family to abduct the boy.
