At least five passengers are feared dead as passengers slipped and fell on rail tracks from a crowded local train in Mumbai. The tragedy happened while the train was travelling towards Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus from Mumbra.
According to reports, the local train was overcrowded and passengers were travelling hanging on the doors near Thane. Senior railway officials and police rushed to the spot. The injured persons were rushed to hospital nearby. As per reports, over 10 persons fell off from the train.
Railway authorities have ordered a probe and an investigation is underway. The incident has affected local train services in the route.
Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis offering his condolences to the bereaved families, with a post on X.
He said that the injured passengers were rushed to Shivaji Hospital and Thane Civil Hospital for medical treatment. The CM also added that the Railway department has initiated an inquiry to find the exact cause of the incident.
The Railway Board announced, shortly after the incident, that doors in Mumbai local trains will be fitted with automatic door closing facilities and that rakes that are currently in service will be redesigned with the same features.
