Even two weeks after an Indore-based couple went missing from Meghalaya's Sohra area, the state police are yet to get any clue about the wife’s whereabouts even as the husband’s body was found in a deep gorge on June 2.

Sonam Raghuvanshi (25) and her husband Raja Raghuvanshi (29) were on a honeymoon trip when they disappeared on May 23, hours after they checked out of a homestay at Nongriat village in East Khasi Hills district.

As the police investigation and the search operation to trace Sonam are still underway, a tourist guide’s claim on Saturday gave a fresh twist to the case.

Albert Pde, a guide at Mawlakhiat, said he had seen the couple accompanied by three male tourists as they were climbing over 3,000 steps from Nongriat to Mawlakhiat around 10 am on May 23—the day they went missing.

"The four men were walking ahead while the woman was behind. The four men were conversing in Hindi but I could not understand what they were speaking as I know only Khasi and English," Pde told news agency PTI.

Pde has also recorded his statement before the police. According to reports, the guide recognised the couple as he had offered them his service on the previous day, but they refused his offer.

According to reports, the couple arrived in Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter. They parked their scooter and trekked 3,000 steps down the gorge to visit the famous living rootbridges in Nongriat village, where they stayed the night and left the homestay the following morning.

Their scooter was found abandoned at a cafe along the road from Shillong to Sohra on May 24.

Even as the Meghalaya government has intensified the search operation and deployed drones to trace Sonam, her family members have accused police of laxity and demanded a CBI probe into the case.

The Madhya Pradesh government, too, has come out in support of the family and urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to direct a CBI probe into the incident.
