Congress targets Modi, Jaishankar as Pak is set to chair UNSC counter-terrorism panel: 'Foreign policy collapse'

The development comes as India's all-party delegations visit partner countries to expose Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and present India's combat measures

Targeting the Narendra Modi-led government over the appointment of Pakistan as vice-chair of key United Nations Security Council body, the Congress charged it reflects the collapse of India's foreign policy. The development comes amid India's outreach programme to partner nations as part of Operation Sindoor.

Congress leader Pawn Khera, taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, said the International Monetary Fund granted $1 billion aid to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor and World Bank decided to give $40 billion to Pakistan soon after Operation Sindoor.

"On June 4 Pakistan gets elected as Chairman of UNSC Taliban Sanctions Committee and  Vice Chairman of UNSC Counter-Terrorism Committee. Of course, this is the sad story of our own foreign policy collapse but how can the global community allow this continuous legitimisation of sponsorship of terrorism by Pakistan," the Congress leader asked in a post on X on Thursday.

As per reports, Pakistan will chair the Taliban Sanctions Committee of the UN Security Council for 2025 and will be vice-chair of the Counter-Terrorism Committee of the United Nations body.

Algeria will chair the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee, while France, Pakistan and Russia will be vice-chairs, PTI reported. Pakistan will be heading the 1988 Taliban Sanctions Committee that imposes sanctions on Taliban-linked groups. The Committee imposes an assets freeze, a travel ban and an arms embargo on individuals, groups, undertakings and entities associated with the Taliban in constituting a threat to the peace, stability and security of Afghanistan, PTI reported. Pakistan will also be co-chair of the Informal Working Groups on Documentation and Other Procedural Questions and on the General UNSC Sanctions Issues.

India headed the UNSC counter-terrorism committee in 2022,  during its tenure in the Council as a non-permanent member.

Pakistan's appointment in the UN body comes amid heightened tensions between India and Pakistan in the aftermath of the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22. Terrorists with alleged Pakistani links killed 26 persons in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam on June 22. India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to avenge the killings. After days of heightened military operation, both nations agreed to stop firing on May 10.
