Calling out the Narendra Modi government for claims that peace had returned to Jammu and Kashmir after the abrogation of the state’s special status, CPI(M) Kerala state secretary M.V. Govindan said the terror attack in Pahalgam proved that the region remains unstable.
“The claim made by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah and others—that peace had been restored and the region had become calm following the abrogation of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status—has been shattered by the terrorist attack,” he said.
Govindan pointed out that the attack occurred just days after a high-level meeting in Srinagar chaired by Shah, further underscoring the gravity of the situation. “The massacre of 28 tourists points to a serious failure on the part of the central government and intelligence agencies in ensuring national security.”

One of the victims of the Pahalgam attack was from Kerala. He extended his condolences to the families of those killed in the attack.
Launching a scathing attack on the Centre, Govindan said, “Even after five years of placing Kashmir under direct central rule by stripping the elected government of its powers, the region remains unstable—a deeply concerning reality. This incident clearly exposes the Modi government's complete failure to dismantle the network of terror.”

The CPI(M) central leadership, too, strongly criticised the Union government for the terror attack.
Party stalwart and Kulgam MLA MY Tarigami told the PTI that it was shameful and painful that tourists who came to Kashmir were attacked. “The government should take strong action against the [perpetrators],” he said.
CPI(M) general secretary M.A. Baby and Kerala Chief Minister and party veteran Pinarayi Vijayan’s official responses were more restrained. Baby tweeted that his thoughts are with the bereaved and the injured and demanded the Union government immediately provide all assistance to the affected. “We are united in the fight against such cowardly terrorist attacks. Apprehend and punish the guilty,” he tweeted.
CM Vijayan also strongly condemned the terror attack. However, unlike Govindan, he refrained from criticising the Modi government at this juncture.
