In a major setback to Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday filed a chargesheet against the senior Congress leaders in a money laundering case linked to the National Herald scam.

Congress overseas unit chief Sam Pitroda has also been named in the chargesheet. Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court will hear the case on April 25.

The chargesheet was filed hours after the ED questioned businessman Robert Vadra, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi's husband, in money laundering case linked to a real estate deal in Haryana.

Last week, the central agency had issued notices to take possession of immovable assets worth Rs 661 crore that it had attached as part of its probe into National Herald the case.

"A notice... has also been served to Jindal South West Projects Limited which occupies the 7th, 8th, and 9th floors at Herald House, Bandra (E), Mumbai, to transfer the rent/lease amount every month in favour of the director, Directorate of Enforcement," it said in a statement.

The ED investigation began in 2021 after a Delhi court took cognisance of a private complaint filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on June 26, 2014.

The complainant had alleged a criminal conspiracy by several political figures, including Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi, apart from late Congress leaders Motilal Vora and Oscar Fernandes for alleged involvement in a money laundering scheme related to the fraudulent takeover of properties valued over Rs 2,000 crore belonging to the Associated Journals Limited (AJL).

AJL is the publisher of the National Herald news platform and it is owned by Young Indian Private Limited.

Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi are majority shareholders of Young Indian with 38 per cent shares held by each one of them. The ED had questioned the duo in detail a few years ago.
