Plea in Supreme Court seeks probe by special team into Murshidabad violence

A petition was filed in the Supreme Court seeking a probe by a Special Investigation Team into the violence in Murshidabad district of West Bengal during the protests against the Waqf Amendment Act.

In his petition, senior lawyer Shashank Shekhar Jha also urged the top court to supervise the investigation.

Three people were killed and several others injured in the violence that erupted in Suti, Dhulian, Samserganj and Jangipur areas of Murshidabad since Friday.

Several vehicles were set on fire, shops and houses were vandalised and stones were pelted at security forces. A total of 210 people have been arrested so far.

The Calcutta High Court has ordered the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the district to assist in restoring normalcy.

Jawed Shamim, Additional Director General (Law and Order), said on Monday that the situation in violence-hit areas is gradually returning to normal, with shops reopening and displaced families starting to return.

"Shops have started to open and people are returning. So far, 19 families have returned to their homes. Both Malda and Murshidabad district administrations are working closely to ensure the safe return of those who had fled," he said.

Police are making public announcements, urging shopkeepers to resume business and encouraging residents to return to normal life.

West Bengal Governor C.V. Ananda Bose said he is holding regular discussions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and that the Centre is monitoring the situation.
