The Supreme Court came down heavily on Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Thursday for his comments on the floor of the state assembly regarding the disqualification of Bharat Rashtra Samiti MLAs and possible byelections. The apex court was hearing a matter related to delay in deciding the disqualification of BRS MLAs who switched sides to Congress.
A bench comprising Justices B.R. Gavai and A.G. Masih called out the Congress chief minister for stating in the Telangana Assembly that byelections will not happen in the state even if BRS MLAs switched sides, while the apex court is hearing the matter. The apex court had censured Reddy’s comments on Wednesday as well and said the chief minister’s remarks made a “mockery of the tenth schedule of the Constitution”.

Hearing a matter related to the alleged delay by the Telangana Assembly speaker in deciding on the petitions seeking disqualification of some BRS MLAs who had defected to the Congress. The bench observed given his earlier experience, the Telangana chief minister must have exercised restraint. Justice Gavai asked senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for Telangana speaker that while the apex court exercises self-restraint, it expects a similar attitude from other wings of democracy.
“Having experience on an earlier occasion, was the CM not expected to at least exercise some degree of restraint? Did we commit a mistake by letting you go at that time and not taking action for contempt/” Live Law reported quoting Justice Gavai.

During the recent Telangana Assembly session, Reddy had said, “Speaker sir, through you, I want to assure the members that they need not worry about byelections. No byelections will happen. Even if BRS desires to have one for their seats, there will be none. Even if their members switch sides, there will not be a byelection".
The Supreme Court had censured the chief minister earlier while he made comments questioning bail granted to BRS leader K. Kavitha in the Delhi liquor policy case. Reddy had to apologise after the apex court reprimanded him for the comments.
