A 32-year-old man operated on his stomach by watching YouTube tutorials causing him to land in hospital with serious complications.
Raja Babu, a graduate in business administration, lives alone in Sunrakh village (Vrindavan), Mathura. For the past few months he had been suffering from abdominal pain and when medical consultations failed, he decided to take things in his own hands. From YouTube he gathered a list of necessary materials- including a blade, a sedative injection, a needle and plastic thread to stitch himself up.
On Wednesday he finally cut up his own stomach and then closed it with 11 stitches. But the pain became unbearable and his relatives then took him to the district hospital. Doctors there however refused to admit him given the seriousness of his condition and referred him to SN Medical College in Agra, after administering first aid.
A doctor at the district hospital said that Raja Babu had been operated on 15 years ago for appendicitis. The fresh bout of pain caused him to inflict a seven inch cut on his abdomen and then stitch it up. It was not clear what he exactly did after the cut but there was a high risk of infection. At this point though, doctors cannot say how widespread the infection is.
Raja Babu said that he had been suffering from pain for the last four months and that the doctors he had gone to could not diagnose the cause. He had even undergone an ultrasound but nothing came up. Hence he decided to cut himself up to see what exactly was wrong with him. He has also said that he tried to pull 'something' out of his stomach but was unsuccessful.
He is currently stable and recovering.
