Tamil Nadu Governor R.N. Ravi and the state government are once again at loggerheads, this time over the National Education Policy. As Tamil Nadu is embroiled in a massive row over NEP, the governor kicked up a fresh controversy saying youth in the state are feeling deprived of opportunities due to the non-implementation of three-language policy.

In a social media post, the governor said he recently interacted with students and leaders from various sectors at the Raj Bhavan and there is a “huge demand” among youth for the implementation of NEP in the state. The governor’s comments come as students’ organisations and the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam are protesting against NEP in Tamil Nadu on Friday.

“Interacted with large number of leaders from cross sections of south Tamil Nadu including education, business, health, hospitality, youth startups, women entrepreneurs, MSME sectors. Also students from several institutions. This region is rich in human and natural resources and yet it feels like a neglected backyard. Despite huge potential for industrialisation people here feel neglected of opportunities,” the Raj Bhavan tweeted.

Governor Ravi added drug abuse among youth is a serious problem in the state and there is a “huge demand for implementation of NEP” in the state. “The youth of this region feel hugely deprived of opportunities compared to those from neighbouring states due to the rigid two language policy of the State Government. They feel that Unfortunately in the name of opposition to Hindi they are not allowed to study even any other South Indian languages. This is indeed unfair. Our youth must have a choice to study language,” Ravi added.
The governor’s comments come as DMK and students’ outfits are protesting against the visit of Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar’s visit to IIT-Madras. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Friday urged party cadres to create awareness among the public regarding opposition to NEP and the delimitation process.
