A few days after being ousted from power in Delhi, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday alleged widespread power cuts in the national capital. At a press conference, senior AAP leader Atishi held papers showing tweets and complaints from the public.

"On February 9th, Sainik Enclave faced a gruelling four-hour power cut. Sunlight Colony Ashram also faced an all-night blackout," she said.

Atishi also cited a complaint from a BJP worker about a six-hour-long power outage in Sangam Vihar. The AAP leader also claimed that such complaints have flooded power companies.

“Families are buying inverters so their children can study without interference. No one needed an inverter during the AAP rule,” Atishi claimed.

Hitting out at the BJP, and highlighting how the issue can be pressing especially with summer approaching, the former chief minister questioned, “If this is the case in just three days, what would be the situation of Delhiites when temperatures soar?”

“This chaos shows that the Aam Admi Party was actively monitoring and supervising Delhi’s power system," she said, adding that “the infrastructure that we maintained efficiently has collapsed within days of the BJP rule”.

The AAP’s attempt to strike a chord with the people of Delhi, especially on issues like power outages that can be a concern in the approaching summer months, comes days after the BJP registered a landslide victory in Delhi ousting the Arvind Kejriwal-led party after over a decade-long rule.

Atishi claimed, “BJP is in power in almost 20 states and the power problems are common in all the states."

In an attempt to restore the faith of the public in the AAP model of governance, she also said that it is a party of educated people. ”Arvind Kejriwal is an engineer who understands the power sector.”

With the summer approaching, both electricity and water are likely to become the issues where the AAP will try to corner the BJP government in the coming months.
