Seven members of a family, including five children, died after a boat carrying 11 persons capsized in the Seep river, a tributary of the Chambal river, in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district on Saturday.

The accident took place in Manpur, around 40 kilometres from the district headquarters, at 4.30 pm. Police said four persons were rescued while the seven others were declared brought dead at a hospital.

"The seven deceased comprise five children in the 4-15 age group, a 35-year-old man and a 30-year-old woman. The deceased are local residents and members of the Mali (gardeners) community. They had come to a nearby village to mourn the death of a person," Superintendent of Police Abhishek Anand told PTI.

According to report by The Hindu, the family from Badouda was crossing the river in a local boat to reach their relative’s place in Manpur when the accident took place.

Local residents said a storm or a whirlpool may have toppled the boat.
