The Bihar unit of BJP, on Wednesday, suspended Bhojpuri singer-politician Pawan Singh from the party for contesting as an independent candidate in the Lok Sabha elections from Karakat seat in south Bihar.

Rashtriya Lok Morcha leader and Union minister Upendra Kushwaha is the NDA candidate for the seat.

Karakat will vote in the seventh phase of polls on June 1.

Pawan Singh decided to contest as an independent candidate after the BJP refused to grant him a ticket from Asansol in West Bengal.

"Pawan Singh has been suspended with immediate effect from the BJP for contesting as an independent candidate from the Karakat Lok Sabha seat in Bihar against the party's decision. This act is considered anti-party. The decision to suspend Singh has been taken by Bihar BJP president Samrat Chaudhary," the party said in a statement.

"It's obvious if someone contests election against the party, such actions are taken at the party's level," Samrat Choudhary has been quoted as saying.

A few days ago, Singh had said he filed his nomination as an independent candidate.

"With the blessings of Maa Durga, both the nominations filed as independent candidates from Karakat Lok Sabha have been successfully accepted after scrutiny.

Now I have been officially declared as the independent candidate of all you people from Karakat Lok Sabha by the Election Commission.

I have full faith that the mothers, aunts, brothers, sisters, young and old of Karakat Lok Sabha will definitely give their blessings in the form of votes this time to elect me as their servant for 5 years as an MP," he had said a tweet in Hindi.
