Who is Vice Admiral Dinesh Tripathi, the next chief of Indian Navy?

He will take charge as the next Chief of Naval Staff on April 30

Vice Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi is set to be the new Navy Chief by the end of this month succeeding incumbent Admiral R. Hari Kumar. 

He is currently serving as Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. He is scheduled to assume Chief of Naval Staff's office on April 30. 

A look at his professional experience shows that he previously served as the Commanding Flag Officer of the Western Naval Command and the Director General of Naval Operations. He also served as the Chief of Personnel. An expert in Communications and Electronic Warfare, he has been in the service for almost 40 years with a remarkable service record. 

Bom on May 15, 1964, he studied at Sainik School, Rewa and graduated from the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Pune. He completed an advanced course at the Defence Services Staff College in Wellington, and the Naval Higher Command Course at Karanja. He was also an alumnus of the Naval Command College in the USA. 

Being a part of the Indian Navy since July 1, 1985, Admiral Tripathi held command over the Indian Naval ships Trishul, Vinash and Kirch, demonstrating his leadership and expertise in naval operations. 

He was the Principal Director of Naval Plans in New Delhi, the Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet and the Director of Naval Operations. The honorary Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Nausena Medal were awarded to him for his contributions to the Indian Navy. 

As the Vice Admiral in 2019, he was the Commandant of the Indian Naval Academy, in Ezhimala and was the Flag Officer Commanding of the Eastern Fleet as a Rear Admiral. During the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, Admiral Tripathi ensured that the Navy remained prepared, united and able to cope with the security threats. 

Known as an enthusiastic learner of International Relations and Military History, he is also a sports lover and follows cricket, tennis and badminton.
