Vijender Singh, India's first Olympic medallist in boxing, abandoned the Congress to the BJP in New Delhi on Wednesday.

After joining the Congress in April 2019, Vijender Singh contested from the South Delhi constituency during the Lok Sabha election later that year. His name was doing the rounds for the last few days as the party's nominee from Mathura, from where actor and incumbent MP Hema Malini has been fielded again by the BJP.

The Olympian joined the BJP ranks in the presence ofVinod Tawde, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri and Rajiv Babbar at party headquarters in New Delhi.

“I have joined the BJP in the interest of the nation and to serve the people. I want to help more and more people,” reports quoted Singh as saying.
