IIT-Guwahati student stopped from going to Afghanistan after pledging to join ISIS

IIT-Guwahati Tauseef Ali Farooqui reportedly went missing from IIT-Guwahati campus at noon and his phone was switched off

Assam police have detained an IIT-Guwahati student after he pledged allegiance to ISIS in a LinkedIn post and claimed in emails that he was going to Afghanistan.

The final-year student of biotechnology, identified as Tauseef Ali Farooqui, posted on LinkedIn that he wanted to join the Islamic State following which he went missing from IIT-Guwahati campus. According to the institute authorities, he went missing at noon and his phone was switched off.

A lookout notice was issued for the missing student hailing from Okhla in Delhi and he was detained from Hajo in Assam's Kamrup district which is around 20 km from the institute.

An Islamic manuscript and a black flag that resembles the ISIS banner were recovered from his hostel.

Police said the student had sent emails to several people saying he was going to Islamic State's Khorasan province in Afghanistan. Tauseef reportedly did not have many friends and mostly stayed indoors at his hostel.

This comes days after police nabbed ISIS India head Haris Farooqi and his associate Anurag Singh alias Rehan near the Bangladesh border in Dhubri district. The duo is currently under NIA custody.
