Two children were hacked to death by an acquaintance of their father in Uttar Pradesh's Badaun on Tuesday evening. The incident sparked tension in the area following which police had to deploy heavy security.

The shocking incident happened at Badaun's Baba Colony and an investigation is on, said the police. Bareilly Inspector-General of Police Rakesh Kumar identified the accused as Sajid, a salon owner, who reportedly knew the children's father, Vinod.

As per the police account, Sajid entered the house of the children on Tuesday at around 7:30 pm. Three children were playing on the terrace of the building. Sajid reportedly went to the terrace and hacked to death Vinod's two children and attacked the third one. The two elder brothers died immediately while the six-year-old managed to survive.

"He then came down where the crowd tried to hold him but he escaped. Police teams swung into action when they got to know that the accused had escaped. The accused fired at the police and was killed in retaliatory fire. The murder weapon and the revolver have been recovered," Badaun  SSP Alok Priyadarshi told reporters.

The FIR has also named the accused's brother Javed. The children's father alleged that the accused had demanded Rs 5,000 from the father of the deceased children.

The murder sparked tension in the area, following which the police have stepped up security. Police officers and security personnel conduct a flag march in the city on Wednesday morning.

According to Badaun District Magistrate Manoj Kumar, the people were agitated after the news of the attack spread. "After this, there was an agitation amongst the people. The people have been asked to maintain peace and the bodies have been sent for postmortem. The reason for the murder is not clear yet," he added.
