In a significant ruling, a court in Varanasi on Wednesday allowed Hindu petitioners to worship inside the sealed basement—vyas ji ka tehkhana—of the Gyanvapi mosque complex.

The district judge directed the district administration to make appropriate arrangements, including removal of barricades, within seven days.

The court further said that prayers should be conducted by priests from the Kashi Vishwanath Temple.

The Vyas family conducted religious ceremonies in the basement till 1993. However, the practices were discontinued following a directive from the state government.
