The estranged husband of Suchana Seth, the entrepreneur who is accused of killing her four-year-old son in a North Goa hotel, told police that he had not been allowed to meet their son for the last five weeks, though the divorce proceedings between the couple were underway in a family court in Bengaluru.
Venkata Raman arrived at Calangute police station on Saturday afternoon to record his statement.
Suchana, the founder and CEO of a Bengaluru-based startup, was arrested on January 8 on her way back to Bengaluru from Goa after police recovered the corpse of her son in a bag she was carrying.
According to police, the accused allegedly smothered the child to death in the hotel room and later attempted suicide by slashing her wrist.
Raman told police that the family court had given him visitation rights but Seth had not allowed him to meet his son for the past five Sundays.
While Raman refused to speak to the media before going to meet the investigating officer (IO), a senior police official told news agency PTI that he was giving a detailed statement.
Raman, who was in Indonesia when the murder took place, reached Bengaluru on Tuesday night and took possession of his son's body.
According to police, Suchana checked into the Goa hotel along with her son on January 6. She got noticed by the hotel staff after she checked out from the hotel alone and the cleaning boy noticed blood stains in the room.
On Wednesday, police recovered two empty bottles of cough syrup in the hotel room where Suchana and her son had stayed, prompting the investigators to doubt that the crime was pre-planned.
"The post-mortem conducted on the body has indicated the possibility that the child might have been smothered to death and there were no signs of struggle. We are examining the possibility if the woman gave a heavy dose of cough syrup to the child before putting him to death," a police official had said.
The investigators are yet to find the motive behind the crime even as the woman was subjected to psychological test to assess her mental state.
