The probe agency had in July conducted searches on properties associated with Ponmudy as well as his son Gautham Sigamani, who is an MP, in a money laundering case linked to alleged illegal sand mining. After the searches, the minister and his son were taken to the ED’s office for interrogation.

In July, a team of seven officers from the Enforcement Decorate conducted searches at Ponmudy’s residence in Chennai, Villupuram and at least a dozen properties linked to the minister, his son and his daughter. According to sources, several incriminating documents and foreign currency were seized during the searches.

Ponmudy is the second high-profile leader of the DMK to have come under ED radar, after minister V. Senthil Balaji, who is facing charges in money laundering case.
