On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti on October 2, Meerut Municipal Corporation installed a statue of Mahatma Gandhi made from scrap at the Commissionerate Square's 'I Love Meerut' selfie spot.

While the idea of building a statue out of scrap was a great idea, the execution wasn't up to par. The statue turned out to be frightening as the face of the Father of the Nation appeared scary. This led to a public uproar from the public and as a response to this, the Corporation removed the statue.

The face, which looked ruined, kept people away from taking selfies near the statue. The statue was seen as an insult to Mahatma Gandhi. Reportedly, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Yogi Adityanath-led UP government for the beautification of the town with a statue of Gandhiji made from scrap.

The statue was made by the artist Dr. Prince Raj of Eco India Innovation Company. The cost of making the statue came to one lakh. The making of the statue was completed in 15 days. The Statue was made using an oil drum and cutting scrap and auto-rickshaw tyres.
