Maharashtra: Aurangabad officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar; Osmanabad is now Dharashiv

Decision to change the names was first taken by the previous MVA govt

The Maharashtra government officially renamed Aurangabad district as Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Osmanabad district as Dharashiv.

According to media reports, the government officially issued a notification on the change of names of both these districts that are part of Marathwada region.

A post from the social media handle of the chief minister’s office showed Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, deputy chief ministers Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar unveiling the renaming plaques.

The decision to change the names was first taken by the previous Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government, led by Uddhav Thackeray, in June 2022.

“With the orders in place, the region, districts, tehsils and villages of Aurangabad and Osmanabad have been renamed as ‘Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar’ and ‘Dharashiv’ respectively,” Hindustan Times quoted a notification from Santosh Gawde, deputy secretary, state revenue department as saying.
