3 soldiers killed in encounter with militants in J&K's Kulgam

Search operations intensified in the Halan forest area

Three soldiers have been killed in an ongoing operation against militants in Jammu and Kashmir's Kulgam district.

Security forces launched a cordon and search operation in the higher reaches of the Halan forest area on Friday evening following inputs about the presence of militants there. The three soldiers from 34 Rashtriya Rifles were injured during the exchange of fire with militants. Later, they succumbed to their injuries.

"Operation Halan #Kulgam. On specific inputs regarding presence of terrorists on higher reaches of Halan in Kulgam, operations launched by Security Forces on 04 Aug 23. In exchange of firing with terrorists, three personnel sustained injuries and later succumbed. Search operations are continuing, Srinagar-based Chinar Corps of the Army said in a tweet. The police also tweeted about the operation.

“The encounter started in the higher reaches of the Halan forest area of #Kulgam district. Army and Kulgam Police are on the job. Further details shall follow,” Kashmir Zone Police said in a tweet.

Police officials added that the search operation has been intensified in the dense forest area.
The operation started after the police on Thursday found a soldier who had gone missing from Chawalgam area of Kulgam district almost a week ago.
