Manipur government on Tuesday partially lifted the suspension on broadband internet, nearly three months after it was banned in the state following the outbreak of ethnic violence. Only those who have a static IP connection can access the internet in a limited way, the Home Department said in a notification.

The mobile internet will, however, remain suspended, it said.

"Connection will be only through static IP and that the subscriber concerned shall not accept any other connection other than allowed for the time being [TSP/ISP shall be held responsible for non-compliance of this condition]," the notification said.

No Wifi Hotspots shall be allowed from any of the routers and systems using the connection at any cost by the subscriber concerned.

The government said it has considered the suffering of the people as the internet ban affected offices and institutions, and people working from home, besides mobile recharge, LPG cylinder booking, payment of electricity bills, and other online services.

The government had banned internet in the state, claiming it was necessary to stop the spread of rumours and fake news that would lead to violence. More than 160 people have lost their lives and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the northeast state on May 3.

The ethnic clashed witnessed a flareup last week after a video of two women being paraded naked surfaced on social media, triggering a nationwide outrage. At least seven persons have been arrested in connection with the incident which reportedly took place on May 4.
