IMD: Monsoon covers almost entire country; to hit Punjab, Haryana in 2 days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that Southwest Monsoon has impacted almost the entire country, and the conditions are likely to continue over northwest, central and west India over the next five days.

While has advanced into parts of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana are likely to receive rainfall during the next two days, according to the agency.

"The monsoon is active currently with its rapid advancement in the last 4-5 days. Leaving some parts of northwest India, the monsoon has impacted almost the entire country. Entire Gujarat and south-east Rajasthan have been covered by the monsoon. In the next two days, it is expected that south Punjab, Haryana and the remaining parts of Rajasthan will be covered," IMD scientist Soma Sen told ANI.

The IMD has issued Orange, Yellow alerts for various parts of the country. The agency has also predicted isolated heavy rainfall over West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttarakhand over the week. It has also forecast thunderstorms and lightning over Madhya Pradesh during the next 4-5 days.

While heavy showers are likely over the Konkan region and Gujarat, northeastern states will also receive a fair amount of rain. As for South India, Kerala will receive moderate-to-very-heavy rainfall. Isolated heavy rainfall is also likely over Coastal Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Himachal Pradesh

As many as six people were killed in various rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours in Himachal Pradesh, taking the toll during the monsoon season from June 24 to 15.

According to state officials, two persons were killed in Hamirpur and one each in Shimla, Kangra, Chamba and Una districts. The rain-related incidents included drowning, landslides, road accidents and falling from a height, the emergency operation centre (EOC) said. So far, 27 people have sustained injuries while three are still missing, the data showed.

The hill state has suffered a cumulative loss (from June 24 to June 27) to the tune of Rs 164.2 crore which includes Rs 89.95 crore loss to the Jal Shakti Department and Rs 72.90 crore to the Public Works Department (PWD), officials said.

The IMD has issued a warning of heavy rainfall, thunderstorm and lightning at isolated places on June 28 and 29 and thunderstorms and lightning on June 30 and July 1.
