Radical Sikh preacher Amritpal Singh was lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam after being flown in a special chartered flight from Punjab on Sunday. Reports said a team of central intelligence agencies including the Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) will reach the jail to question the Waris Punjab De chief.
Amritpal, who was on the run for more than a month, was arrested Punjab Police on Sunday morning from a Gurudwara in Moga district.
"He has been kept in a special cell under tight security. A team from Punjab Police is present in the jail along with personnel of Assam Police," a senior officer said. Nine of his aides, who were arrested earlier, have also been lodged in Dibrugarh jail.
"He will be questioned on his association with his sympathisers and his source of funding. Because, intelligence agencies have got a lot of inputs regarding his association with handlers in Pakistan and other countries," a senior official told ANI.
The officer said Assam Police has been asked to beef up security around the jail premises and that the visitors need to be thoroughly frisked. A team of the Central Armed Police Force (CRPF) has also been deployed on the jail premises.
Amritpal had been on the run since March 18 when a police crackdown was launched against him and members of his outfit 'Waris Punjab De'. The Punjab Police had invoked the stringent National Security Act (NSA) against the Khalistan sympathiser.
Several cases have been lodged against the radical preacher and his associates for allegedly spreading disharmony, attempt to murder, attack on police personnel and obstructing the lawful discharge of duty by public servants.Â
Amritpal was taken into custody at 6.45 am as he came out of the Gurdwara in Rode, the place where he took over last year as the chief of Waris Punjab De.
