Veteran journalist Tapash Ganguly passes away

Ganguly was THE WEEK's senior special correspondent in Kolkata for 15 years

Veteran journalist Tapash Ganguly passed away today at his house in Tollygunge in Kolkata. He was 81.

Ganguly had a massive heart attack and died at around 4.30am. His final rites were conducted at the Keoratala Ghat at around 12pm.

He was THE WEEK's senior special correspondent in Kolkata, and was with the magazine since its launch in 1982. He left THE WEEK in 2007. His daughter Haimanti, too, worked with the magazine.

Ganguly had also worked with Bengali dailies Anandabazar Patrika and Aajkaal, and Samay Paribartan monthly magazine.

His brother Tarun worked for The Telegraph. Another brother, Shyamal, is a famous Bengali writer - poet and novelist. Ganguly, too, wrote poems.

"I express my profound grief at the demise of eminent journalist Tapash Ganguly," said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

"He had a long association with Anandabazar Patrika, Aajkaal and THE WEEK. His demise is an incomparable loss to the world of journalism. I offer my deepest condolences to Tapash Ganguly's family and friends," the CM said.

Ganguly is survived by his wife Sipra, Haimanti and son-in-law Rajesh Mukherjee, who is a captain in the Indian Navy.
