The BJP's top leadership might be critical of the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru's 'policy failures.' But, Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Monday, gave Nehru the credit for getting India global recognition.

Bommai, who garlanded the statue of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on the occasion of his birth anniversary at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, said, "Pandit Nehru takes the credit for taking India to the international level. As the first Prime Minister of Independent India, he laid the foundation for development. He did a commendable job at the international level for the Non-Alignment Movement with General Tito. And India is still playing a major role in NAM," recalled Bommai, referring to Nehru's argument that India and other post-colonial states had no good reason to take sides in the Cold War and had many reasons to maintain cordial relations with both the US and Soviet Union.

Further, the CM recalled that Nehru had worked very closely with Mahatma Gandhi, the father of the nation. "Nehru supported Gandhiji during India's freedom struggle and worked hard for the rise of a new India," said Bommai adding that his birth anniversary was being celebrated as Children's Day as Nehru was fond of children.
