Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati has declared support for Droupadi Murmu, NDA’s presidential candidate.

“Our party thinks of the Dalit Samaj as crucial to our movement. Hence we have decided to extend support to Droupadi Murmu. This crucial decision has not been taken in alliance with the BJP or the NDA or against the opposition, but has been taken keeping in mind our party’s movement. We have taken this decision so that an able and hardworking woman from the Scheduled Tribes shall be President of the country.

Mayawati’s support is merely symbolic as there is just one member of the party in the state’s current Vidhan Sabha. In the Vidhan Parishad it has four members. In the Lok Sabha it has 10 members.

Meanwhile Murmu has been on a roll on social media. On June 23, before her nomination had been filed, she took to Twitter to say, “Nothing can happen without the blessings of the public. I hope that all countrymen will like my leadership”.

On the same day she also posted, “I am hopeful that …my leadership as the President of the country will be liked by all countrymen”.

Murmu filed her papers on June 25. Her Twitter bio reads: ‘President of India’ and her handle is @President_murmu.

On Instagram her bio is more modest. ‘Candidate for President of India 2022. Ex-MLA from Rairangpur, Odisha. Former Governor of Jharkhand,Former MoS of Transport and Commerce (sic.)

The first picture posted on her account is from her nomination. It also features BJP president JP Nadda, UP CM Yogi Adityanath and Defence minister Rajnath Singh.
