Congress MLA from Jharkhand, Irfan Ansari, demanded status of 'martyr' to those killed in the violence during the protests against suspended BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for her controversial remarks on prophet Mohammad.

Two people were killed and many, including security personnel, were critically injured as violent protests rocked Ranchi.

Ansari sought magisterial inquiry into the deaths. He said Jharkhand is a “secular state.” “The incident in Ranchi is a matter of investigation. I demand that this be investigated. Government should conduct a fair investigation,” he said.

"I demand that the government give the status of 'martyr' to those who died. They should be given Rs 50 lakh ex-gratia as well as a government job to their families. I will fight for this," news agency ANI quoted the MLA as saying.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren had ordered a high-level probe into the violence. A two-member committee, comprising senior IAS officer Amitabh Kaushal and Additional Director General (ADG) of Police Sanjay Latkar, was formed to investigate the violence.

The committee has been asked to submit its report to the state government in a week.
