The Enforcement Directorate has summoned National Conference patriarch Farooq Abdullah to appear at its headquarters in Delhi on May 31 (Tuesday).

According to reports, Farooq has been summoned in connection with a money laundering case involving the Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association.

The allegations relating to Farooq concern his tenure as chief of the JKCA. There are claims that between 2002 and 2011, about Rs 43 crore was siphoned off from the JKCA. The money included grants from the BCCI.

In late 2020, the ED issued orders to attach properties of Farooq worth nearly Rs 12 crore. “The attached properties include Farooq’s residence on Gupkar Road, residential properties at Tehsil Katipora in Tangmarg and Bhatindi in Sunjwan, Jammu, commercial buildings in Srinagar’s posh Residency Road area, and land at four different places in J&K,” The Indian Express had reported at the time.

The National Conference appeared to project the summons as persecution of the opposition. The party tweeted, “ED summons to JKNC President Dr Farooq Abdullah nothing new, this is common for all opposition parties in India. He has continued to maintain his innocence in the matter and has cooperated with the investigative agencies and will do so in this case as well.”
