Bharath Bandh today over demand for caste-based census

Several states have been demanding that a caste-based census be conducted

The All India Backward and Minority Communities Employees Federation (BAMCEF) has called for a Bharat Bandh on May 25. Neeraj Dhiman, the Saharanpur District President of the Bahujan Mukti Party (BMP) said the group has called for the bandh over the Centre not conducting a caste-based census for the Other Backward Classes (OBC).

The call for the bandh has been supported by Rashtriya Parivartan Morcha, Bharat Mukti Morcha, Bahujan Mukti Morcha, BAMCEF president Vaman Meshram said, according to reports. However, no major political party has come to support the bandh. 

Several states have been demanding that a caste-based census be conducted for the OBCs, but the centre hasn't paid heed to the demand. Other demands include the non-use of EVMs in elections, providing reservations to SC, ST and OBC in the private sector, guaranteeing MSP to farmers and demanding non-implementation of CAA and NRC. 

States like Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh might see disruptions. The capital and other states aren't likely to face disruptions. Closure of shops and public transport is expected in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are expected. Government and private offices are expected to function normally. No disruption in cab, autorickshaw, Ola or Uber services have been reported so far.
