Dozens of passengers on a SpiceJet flight from Mumbai to Durgapur were injured on Sunday when it faced severe turbulence during descent. Media reports said around 40 people on board were injured in the incident. The Indian Express reported “Of them, 12 received serious injuries, and are now in a stable condition.”

The plane, a Boeing 737, flew into a storm, which resulted in cabin baggage falling on passengers.

The Director General of Civil Aviation Arun Kumar was quoted by The Indian Express as saying, “A few of them (injured persons) have head injuries and have received stitches. One passenger has also complained of a spinal injury.” The DGCA on Monday ordered a probe into the accident.

Immediate medical assistance was provided upon the aircraft's arrival in Durgapur, a SpiceJet spokesperson said.

“SpiceJet expresses its regret at this unfortunate incident and is providing all possible medical help to the injured,” the spokesperson added.
