A court in Assam, on Friday, granted bail to Gujarat MLA and Dalit leader Jignesh Mevani in a case of alleged assault of a policewoman.

The court in Barpeta district had completed its hearing in the case on Thursday, and had reserved its order for Friday.

“The district and sessions court (Barpeta) granted bail to Mevani on a bond of ₹1,000. Further details of the bail order are awaited,” Angshuman Bora, Mevani's lawyer has been quoted as saying.

Mevani was remanded to police custody for five days on Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a woman police officer when she was accompanying him from Guwahati airport to Kokrajhar, where a case had been lodged against him in connection with the tweet, after being brought from Gujarat.

The independent MLA from Vadgam seat in Banaskantha was arrested first in Gujarat on April 19 for a tweet against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
