The Drugs Controller General of India has given restricted emergency use authorisation (EUA) for the Covaxin Covid vaccine for use in children between ages of 6 and 12, media reports said on Tuesday.

Covaxin, manufactured by Bharat Biotech, was the first indigenously developed Covid vaccine.

Covaxin had been approved by the DCGI for use among children in the 12-18 age group in December last year.

In a meeting last week, the subject expert committee had sought more information from Bharat Biotech while considering its application for EUA for Covaxin in the 6-12 age group.

Last week, the Central expert panel on vaccination had recommended granting EUA for the Corbevax vaccine among children in the 5-11 age group. Corbevax is made by Biological E.

Vaccination for children in the 15-18 age group started in January. It was extended to children above12 in May.
