Madhya Pradesh Congress chief Kamal Nath and former MP chief minister Digvijaya Singh met party president Sonia Gandhi on Monday – second time within a week, suggesting the gain of momentum in party’s preparations for the 2023 assembly polls.

Nath and Singh met Gandhi separately on Monday, but sources said the discussions were around the 2023 assembly polls in Madhya Pradesh as well as in states like Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

The meetings are reportedly taking place against the backdrop of the presentation of a report related to upcoming polls by political strategist Prashant Kishor to Congress high command. Monday’s meeting also assumes importance as it comes after the visit of Union Home Minister Amit Shah during which he held two-hour long discussion with senior leaders of Madhya Pradesh BJP with focus on 2023 polls.

Narendra Saluja, the media coordinator for Kamal Nath, said the hour-long meeting on Monday afternoon remained centered on different political issues, organisational matters, future strategy and programmes of the Madhya Pradesh unit of the party.

In a deviation from Congress’s usual stand of not announcing its chief ministerial candidate ahead of polls, the MP Congress, earlier this month, decided to contest the 2023 polls under the leadership of Kamal Nath. The senior leaders of the party have been showing a united front with two meetings held within a fortnight this month.

The party has recently given momentum to its poll preparations with a series of meetings with different cells and units, most of them in the presence of Kamal Nath. During the past week, apart from the meeting of five senior most leaders at Nath’s house, meetings of cooperatives cell, social media cell and Panchayati Raj cell were also held.

Meanwhile, Nath also conducted an internal survey of the 96 sitting MLAs of the party in the state. The survey reportedly found about 30-35 MLAs on the weak turf and all of them have been asked to improve their performances in their constituencies.

Earlier, both Nath and Singh had met Sonia Gandhi on April 19 in the presence of Kishor. During the weekend, former chief of MP Congress, Arun Yadav also met Sonia Gandhi.
